What Is 85% MIT Extract and How Is It Different From 70%?
If you have been shopping for kratom extracts, you have seen the numbers. 30%, 70%, 85%. MIT, mitragynine, freebase, salt. It gets confusing fast. This post breaks down what 85% MIT extract actually is and how it stacks up against the 70% extracts we carry at Roots Kava Bar in Port Jefferson.
First, what does MIT mean?
MIT is short for mitragynine. It is the main alkaloid found in kratom leaf (Mitragyna speciosa). When a product says 70% or 85% MIT, it is telling you how much of the powder, by weight, is mitragynine.
Plain kratom leaf usually tests somewhere around 1 to 2% mitragynine. Extracts are made by pulling the alkaloids out of a large amount of leaf and concentrating them into a small amount of powder.
What is 85% MIT extract?
Our 85% mitragynine extract is a freebase kratom extract powder standardized to 85% mitragynine. That works out to about 850 mg of mitragynine in every gram. It is the strongest MIT product we sell.
Freebase means the alkaloid is in its plain, unsalted form. It has the bitter kratom taste and does not dissolve well in plain water.
How is it different from 70%?
The simple difference is the number. A 70% extract has about 700 mg of mitragynine per gram. An 85% extract has about 850 mg per gram. So gram for gram, the 85% has more MIT in it. You use less of it by weight to get the same amount of mitragynine.
We carry two 70% extracts, and they are not the same as each other either:
70% mitragynine freebase extract: the same plain, unsalted form as the 85%. Bitter, and it does not mix into water well. About 700 mg of MIT per gram.
70% mitragynine salt extract: a salt form of the extract. It is nearly flavorless and dissolves in water, so it is easier to mix into a drink. Tested up to 70% MIT.
85% mitragynine freebase extract: the most concentrated of the three. Same freebase form as the 70% freebase, with more MIT per gram.
Freebase vs salt, in plain words
This trips a lot of people up. Freebase and salt are two forms of the same alkaloid. A salt form, like the common mitragynine HCl, is made by pairing the alkaloid with an acid. That makes it dissolve in water and cuts down the taste.
Freebase is the plain alkaloid. It is the form most people think of when they hear MIT powder. It is easy to weigh and easy to put into capsules, but it tastes bitter and will mostly sit on top of plain water.
So if taste and mixing matter to you, look at the salt. If you just want the most MIT per gram, the 85% freebase is the one.
Who is 85% MIT for?
Honestly, it is for experienced kratom users who already know extracts. It is not where anyone should start. If you are new to extracts, the 70% freebase is the better first step, and if you are new to kratom altogether, start with plain kratom powder instead.
How to measure an extract this strong
This part matters. An 85% extract is many times more concentrated than leaf, so a tiny amount by weight is a lot of mitragynine.
Use a milligram scale that reads to 0.001g. Kitchen scales and measuring spoons are not accurate enough for extracts.
Weigh every time. Do not eyeball it.
Store it sealed, dry and away from kids and pets.
Start very small, and do not mix it with alcohol or other substances.
Sizes, kilo and bulk
All three extracts are sold by weight from 1 gram up to 5 kilos, with 3g, 5g, 10g, 25g, 50g, 100g, 250g, 500g, 1 kilo and 2 kilo sizes in between. The 85% starts at $11.49 for a gram. The 70% freebase starts at $10.99 and the 70% salt starts at $11.99.
Shops and repeat customers buying kilo and bulk mitragynine can call (934) 259-8902 for pricing on bigger orders. Everything else we carry is in our kratom shop.

Quick FAQ
Is 85% MIT the same as 85% kratom? Not quite. It means the powder is 85% mitragynine by weight, not 85% leaf. It is an extract.
Is the 85% a salt or freebase? Freebase.
Which one tastes best? The 70% salt. It is nearly flavorless. Both freebase extracts are bitter.
