If you have 15 people, or 30, or 40, none of that fits. That is the gap we fill at Roots Kava Bar in Port Jefferson.

What we are

Roots is an alcohol-free bar and lounge at 250 East Main Street in Port Jefferson. We serve kava, kanna, matcha, coffee, herbal teas, mocktails and vegan snacks. There is live music, open mic nights and game nights, plus board games and video games on the shelf whenever you want them. Our owner has been a practicing herbalist for 13 years, and the drink list is built around that.

For parties, the short version is this: we host groups up to 40, and there is no minimum and no deposit. You pick a date, we hold the space, your people show up.

What a party at Roots looks like

Every group runs its night a little differently, but most parties here follow the same loose shape.

• A round of mocktails when everyone arrives. Our menu has house mocktails plus matcha, coffee and herbal teas for people who want something warm.

• A kava bowl passed around the table. Kava is served in a shell, and sharing a bowl is the traditional way to drink it. It is a good icebreaker for a mixed group. Our kava page explains what it is if your guests have never tried it.

• Board games and video games from the shelf, or a game night if your date lines up with one.

• Live music or open mic on the nights we run them, or your own playlist on a quieter night.

• Vegan snacks throughout, so nobody is running out for food.

Nobody is watching the clock for a room turnover, and nobody is counting drinks against a minimum. People sit, talk, play and leave when they are ready.

Who books with us

The parties we see most often:

• Birthdays, from 21st birthdays for friends who do not drink to 40ths and 50ths where half the guests are driving home.

• Baby showers, where the guest of honor gets the same drink as everyone else instead of a glass of juice at a bar.

The lounge

The lounge is the room most parties end up in. It is set up for sitting and talking, with soft seating and low tables rather than rows of chairs. It is easy to pull a corner together for 15 or spread out for 40. For smaller groups, the bar itself works too.

Happy Hour

Happy Hour runs 4 pm to 7 pm daily. If your party starts early, that window covers the first round or two, which brings the night's cost down without any package pricing.

A few practical notes

• We are fully alcohol-free, so there is no bring-your-own option. That is the point of the place, and it is why the sober guests, the designated drivers and the people who are just not drinking that night all get the same experience.

• Vegan snacks are on the menu. If you want to bring a cake, ask when you book.

• Parking and directions are on the visit page. We are on East Main Street in the village, so the ferry, the harbor and the rest of Main Street are a short walk away if your group wants to wander after.
